| Targeted Industry: Apparel, footwear, agriculture and technology Stated Aim: “[T]o combine the efforts of business, civil society organizations, and colleges and universities to promote and protect workers’ rights and to improve working conditions globally through adherence to international standards.” (FLA Mission) Historical Context: In the 1990s, sustained campaigning drew attention to child labor, sweatshop conditions and other human rights and labor violations in production of apparel. Year Launched: 1999 Method of Operation: FLA requires companies to monitor their supply chains for compliance with FLA’s labor standards, and implement policies to prevent and detect labor violations. Monitored Entities: Factories Examples of Relevant Rights-holders: Workers in the apparel, agricultural and technology industry supply chains, particularly seasonal or migrant workers.
